This made me think of a story-ish kind of thing. What if there was a world of the dead, and in the world of the dead, people went and redid their families and everything, or caught up with their old family when they passed. They wouldn't age, cuz their dead, unlike vampires or anything, but similiar all the same. So, they have their families, and one by one, each person had to go be 'reborn' which is themselves leaving into the world of the living once again, their personas being reborn as babies. Then, one of the members of their family was their 'gaurdian' or 'gaurdian angel,' hence why only some people believe to have/see them, because their dead. Generally, the gaurdian would be their significant other, because in the world of the dead, if you want love, you always have it. The dead become the living once again, to make more room in the land of the dead, hence the birth/death ratio.
